Though cool outdoors, it's been good to get out on the bikes with friends.

We were in the process of changing the location for next week's dirt ride when Singletrack Advocates opened the Kincaid trails that are south of Raspberry Road. So, see us there on May 24 and thank the wind for drying things out!

Also next week, if you'd like to give the trails a little TLC, you can join Singletrack Advocates in a work party or two. Here's a message from STA:

<br style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; caret-color: rgb(32, 32, 32); color: #202020; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; Last weekend, the Ship Creek Trail was clear except for an icy tunnel, while the Coastal Trail and Chester Creek still had areas of snow. It is melting fast, but it sure doesn't seem that way.

We're hoping that our first ride of the season on Wednesday, May 10, will give us clear trails! Be sure to sign up so we know you're coming.

Meanwhile, we've already had two events. The Meet & Greet in late April was a chance to see familiar faces (without helmets!) and meet some new riding friends. It was great to be back in-person indoors for the first time since 2019 and I think Paramount Cycles was glad to have us back.

On Monday, May 1, we had our first Bear Aware clinic in several years. Many thanks to Kristine for arranging for us to be at the Hilltop chalet. The event was open to the public and we had guests from the BikeMe Anchorage group and other people from the wider community. Our presenter, wildlife biologist Marian Snively, showed us tips for effectively using bear spray and offered pointers for other ways we can stay safe while biking, hiking, and just living in bear country! We were able to practice with inert canisters, so it was a worthwhile refresher before we hit the trails.

Marian gives Patience some pointers.

Kristine nails it!

Here's a link with resources including videos to help you prepare for the season. ride of the year: the Spring Fling!

Please join us for the Meet
and Greet where you can meet other riders and find out more about the
upcoming season. We'll have a ride leader sign-up sheet, too, so please
look at the schedule and choose a ride (or two) to lead.

All Wednesday rides from June - August begin at 7:00 pm unless otherwise noted. May and September ride times are listed next to the ride date.

Helmets
are required of all riders. Be sure your bike is in good working
condition with tires aired for the trail type and the chain lubed and
ready to go.

Please use the Meetup page to RSVP for rides and events to help us plan for enough ride leaders.

APRIL

We were talking about the heat after Wednesday's Kincaid ride and how 70 degrees here in Anchorage feels much hotter than in the Lower-48. Long daylight hours, the angle of the sun - this article in the Alaska Beacon touches on some of the reasons. It also talks about the impact the current conditions have on our bodies.

Not only is it hot and dry, but we also have had wildfire smoke originating in or drifting into Anchorage. I could smell it while riding at Kincaid, but not until I had been riding hard for a few miles - maybe not the best approach for a poor air quality day. What's a mountain biker to do?

We're often told to listen to our bodies, but sometimes our bodies don't send us a message until we've gone too far: dehydration, fatigue, cramps, and worse can result. I'm not going to tell anyone to not bike while it's smoky, but we shouldn't aim for a personal best in those conditions!

Some electrolyte mixes from my cupboard.
(Not an endorsement of any one product.)

What I will recommend is that you be careful to hydrate. I carry two kinds of hydration: in my Camelbak, I carry fresh water - enough for the expected length of the ride, plus a bit more. On my bike I carry a bottle filled with an electrolyte drink that helps restore some of the sodium, potassium, and magnesium lost through sweat or urine. When you are low on these, you're more likely to develop muscle cramps and possibly have other physical issues like headaches and muscle spasms, according to this article. (You can consult any number of articles to learn more about this topic.) When you begin feeling fatigued from a long ride, you are also more likely to crash - and none of us needs that!

As we enter another week of warm sunny weather, don't just listen to your body, anticipate what she will need for the activities you have planned. Bring water, an electrolyte replacement drink, and extra snacks on your rides or hikes. If you drive to a trailhead, have more cold drinks waiting in a cooler. Don't worry about setting a personal best on a trail - take time to enjoy the views and snack breaks with friends. Your muscles will thank you!

bikegirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05774265628828868112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1056525970132731687.post-54498303369282217422022-06-14T20:14:00.000-08:002022-06-14T20:14:14.311-08:00Ride the Burn! Thanks to you and you and you!
The Hemlock Burn Trail in Chugach State Park has been approved by the park and is open to ride from top to bottom! The new singletrack connects Glen Alps with Prospect Heights and then to the network of Hillside singletrack trails.

Learn more here.

This is just one of many trail projects that your membership has supported through disbursing funds that exceeded any ride permit fees, insurance, or other expenses (such as prizes). So, thank you for becoming a member and helping to support the fantastic trails we get to enjoy here in Anchorage!

Riding the lower Burn. It has been fun to have so many people show up for the Wednesday evening rides, and so far we've had enough leaders to divide into different skill levels. We do have a couple of requests:
1) If you can lead a ride, please contact Jo-Ann through the Meetup site so she can sign you up to lead.
2) If you are a member and plan to attend a ride, please RSVP that you will be there.

These two things help us plan the rides for everyone. Plus, the more we have organized early in the season, the more time we have to ride!

The rides are posted on Meetup. First my brain says: "ooh, I really should do that," and then it might say "but it's cold and dark out and you work tomorrow." I might follow the temperatures and then just say: "you have the gear; now charge that light and bundle up because you need to ride with the girls!"

And that is usually the best answer.

While the number of holiday season gatherings I attend has shrunk to near zero, I especially miss the Solstice rides we used to do, so when Gloria posted a ride for December 19, I made sure my light was charged!

Just four of us rode that night down trails that were sometimes a bit squirrely, but mostly had soft landings. Few people were out. The temperature hovered around 20 degrees: perfect in my book. And a perfect way to enter the holiday weeks. With whoops and laugher - the voices of familiar friends.

Bev with her colorful bike in the reflected light.
Taken by Gloria

My wish is that we will seek out opportunities to ride, hike, ski, snowshoe and just enjoy the outdoors together this winter. Go ahead. Post up. See who joins you. Maybe a new friend. But if we don't see you on the trails this winter, I hope we will all be riding together when our official season begins the first week of May. Watch for it. We'll be here for you.

posted by Rose

bikegirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05774265628828868112noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1056525970132731687.post-25187121075764827282021-11-04T20:24:00.001-08:002021-11-04T20:24:30.933-08:00The 2021 season recap
It has been over a month since we had our last official ride of the season, a ride on sometimes snowy trails in 40-degree temperatures in Far North Bicentennial Park and the Campbell Tract. Unusual conditions during this uncertain time, but with good friends who enjoyed every moment of a beautiful fall evening that also looked like winter.

Michele and Maggi enjoy a crisp evening.

When the organizers made the decision to delay the start of the scheduled rides this year, we hoped that our community would have a higher vaccination rate by early July. It was not to be, yet we pedaled on anyway. Because after 2020, we missed riding with friends. We missed meeting and welcoming new riders into our little group. We missed the energy and, for some of us, we really missed the post-ride treats and social time!

Even the mud loves our bikes!

Normally, we end our season with a party filled with
prizes for the people who show up to lead, sweep, and ride - among other
things, but we'll just need to wait to get together at another time
when people feel more comfortable sharing indoor spaces. We do have some
statistics for you - thanks to Gloria who kept the tallies again
this year (we need a prize for her!).

Though our group experienced a short and somewhat rainy season, it was also filled with fun rides with friends. Most rides had small group sizes, but on July 14th, 15 riders showed up for our largest group of the season! The next largest group sizes were 11 people on both August 18 and September 22.

The Divas who attended the most rides were Michele with 10 rides, followed by Rae and Kirsten who both attended 8 rides! STA is Anchorage's local mountain bike trail nonprofit that preserves, maintains and creates singletrack trails in our community. Specifically, STA supports the regulation change to allow bicycle use on the Hemlock Burn Trail. Bicycle use on this trail is specified in the Chugach State Park (CSP) Trail Management Plan, and adopting DNR's proposed regulation changes will finally allow bicycle use, which will meet the trail plan's intent. STA and CSP have partnered to develop this amazing trail for our community for biking, hiking and skiing. STA led the development of the trail, raised the funds to build the trail, managed the construction of the trail, and will maintain the trail. Considering STA funded, constructed, and will maintain the Hemlock Burn Trail, this regulation change is necessary to allow bikers to utilize this asset. We are excited to develop this successful partnership with Alaska State Parks to bring world-class recreational opportunities to our community.

Sincerely,
STA Steering Committee
bikegirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05774265628828868112noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1056525970132731687.post-1828515570662920872021-07-22T22:34:00.000-08:002021-07-22T22:34:00.889-08:00Rain riding Divas!

For our third ride of the season, Michele led a casual ride in the rain at Kincaid. We have a few news bits for you this week.

Singletrack Advocates (STA) has resumed work on the Hemlock Burn Trail in Chugach State Park. The trail is not yet open to riders, but we can help this happen in a couple of ways:

Donation: It takes funding to build awesome trails and one of our missions is to support trail building and maintenance in Southcentral Alaska. We'll be making a $2,000 donation to STA this week to help complete this trail this summer... so that we can ride it!

Sweat of the brow: STA will be announcing trail work sessions in coming weeks and we will do our best to fill you in either here or through the Meetup page. You can also get updates from STA's social media or via email when you join STA.

Your Diva friends have been adding rides to the Meetup calendar in the run-up to the "official" ride schedule that begins in July (see previous post on this site). Remember to RSVP the rides you would like to attend and cancel if your plans change. This will help our volunteer ride leaders know how many people to expect at each ride.

About that ride schedule, we still need ride leaders and sweeps for the rides. Please contact Jo-Ann (via the Meetup page or email) if you would like to help lead a ride. And remember, you don't need to be the fastest to lead; you just need to love sharing the joy of mountain biking on our trails and mostly know your way around. Psst, signing up to lead is a great incentive for learning the trails!

See you on the trails!

bikegirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05774265628828868112noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1056525970132731687.post-43482315262119047172021-05-15T14:46:00.082-08:002021-08-25T07:19:45.771-08:002021 Ride Schedule - updated on 8/25/2021
Things are quickly changing in this Covid era, with CDC guidance changing weekly. However, we have put together an abbreviated schedule in the hopes that by the time July rolls around (get it?) most -- if not all -- of our members will be fully vaccinated. Ride locations are subject to change, so check the Meetup for the up-to-date schedule and to confirm your ride attendance. This has been a strange time on planet Earth, but the cycles of the seasons roll on and we, too, will figure out how to do the same.

Each day, as we watch how our state and local governments make plans for dealing with this Covid-19 pandemic, the Divas are also trying to figure out how we can host events for riders of all skill levels while keeping appropriate physical distance (Fizz-dizz) so that all can stay safe. For this reason, you won't see a schedule unless we are allowed to gather in larger numbers at trailheads.

Meanwhile, at the Spring Fling Zoom chat last evening, people made suggestions for how we can continue to be a group that supports women cyclists.

1) Small Group Rides: Use the Meetup site to post rides for whatever location/skill level you wish; set a limit for the number of people who may RSVP; and only allow those who RSVP to join in the ride. This will require people who must cancel their RSVP to do so in a timely manner that allows others to move from a wait list onto the ride. Anyone can create an event.

2) Interactive Online clinics: There are a multitude of videos on how to change a tire, but sometimes people want the interaction of a clinic to ask questions that presenters may not include in a five minute recording. Using Zoom, we could offer such clinics. People would need to RSVP so that they can be included in the Zoom chat, and being able to use the device's camera will help the trainer see where there are issues.

3) Carry what you need: Sometimes on group rides, we depend on others to offer up a pump, a multi-tool, or spare inner-tube when needed. This sharing and cooperation defines us. However, to minimize the chance of spread of this virus, each of us should plan to be self-sufficient when on the trails. We have always encouraged this, but now it is even more important!

4) It's still a Big, Wild, Life: Trails are starting to dry; the bears are wandering about in the woods and on trails; moose will soon be giving birth to their calves. Ride with awareness and carry your bear spray.

Until next time, see you on the trails!
We had another perfect summer night to ride at Kincaid. We split into 2 groups and took off from the Jodphur parking lot. The grass is growing fast and tall! Nancy was leading her group and biking around a grassy corner on Bolling Alley and almost ran (literally) into a black bear. Make noise when you're cornering in those grassy, hard-to-see spots. This bear heard us coming and ran away, but whew.....

Now that the dirt season is here, it's good to take a look at the suspension on your mountain bikes and dial things in for better control and comfort when riding over the rocks and roots we find on the trails.

This description and video from Liv say it pretty well. Notice that it takes playing with the controls on your rear shock and your fork to know what they actually do. Also, note that your shock may have different labels for the controls than those used in the examples. If in doubt, ask your bike mechanic if they can offer tips on doing this yourself.

If we have enough interest, we may add a suspension tuning clinic to the schedule, so keep that in mind.

Another way to improve the quality of your ride is to change your tire pressure. Lots of Divas have heard me say “lower your pressure for the
dirt” and asked “how much?” That depends on the trail, and it depends on
your tires and wheels. On a hard-packed trail with not many roots, you can ride
with a bit more air pressure, but when you're on a bumpier trail, less pressure will help.

Think of your tires like a basketball: When pumped up high, both bounce really well! And firm tires are great on the road, but when riding on roots and rocks, firm tires mean they are bouncing off each protrusion, giving you less control as those tires leave the ground. You'll also feel more beat up from the rough trail. These are signs that you should lower your pressure. But, how much?

The amount of tire pressure you use will depend on the size of your rims and tires, whether you are running tubeless tires, and how much you weigh. The sidewalls of your tires will give you a starting point by listing the recommended inflation range (such as 30 - 60 psi), but that highest number is usually reserved for pavement. The range 20 - 40 psi is a better starting point for our dirt trails with the lower range for lighter riders on tubeless. Remember, if you start on the high side and make adjustments on the trail, you should find the perfect air pressure. Then check the pressure with a gauge when you finish riding so you know what worked for those trail conditions.

You should also remember to check your tire pressure before each ride because your tires will naturally continue to lose air. You don't want to start the ride too low and risk a flat!

Don't be afraid to adjust your suspension or tire pressure to get a better quality ride. And don't forget to carry a tire pump and spare inner tube (and maybe a shock pump) in case you need more air later in the ride. Now get out and ride this weekend!
